You could probably guess the name ‘Ampthill’ is of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning ‘Ant Hill’. The first settlement was called ‘Aemethyll’, which literally means ‘ant-heap’ or ‘ant infested hill’. King Henry III confirmed the right to hold a market on Thursdays. The market continues today, or rather Thursday, more than 750 years later.

Henry VIII often visited Ampthill Castle, where Katherine of Aragon lived from 1531 until divorced in 1533, Although the Castle is now gone, some signs of castle life remain. Katherine’s Cross in Ampthill Park which was where Kit Williams buried the ‘golden hare’in the treasure hunt ‘Masquerad’.

Ampthill is about 1 mile from Woburn Forest Centre Parc.
